Transportation Priorities

The NWMC Transportation Committee and Board have adopted an updated set of Transportation Priority projects.  The list demonstrates the need for increased investment in our region's infrastructure.  Projects on the list were submitted by NWMC members or recommended by staff from existing plans or programs, including the IDOT Multi-Year Program, Illinois Tollway Capital Program, CMAP Go To 2040 Regional Comprehensive Plan, RTA Regional Plan, programs of transit providers (Metra, CTA and Pace), county transportation plans as well as past NWMC Transportation Priority lists.

The list is not exhaustive, but will provide our state and federal legislators an overview of the vast infrastructure needs in our region.  As demonstrated in the 2015 NWMC Legislative Program, the overall theme of our transportation priorities remains making critical investments in our infrastructure to grow jobs and to provide sustainable transportation funding.

2009 NWMC Transportation Priorities

Route 53 Extension
Yellow Line Extension
Metra STAR Line

Guided by the NWMC Transportation Committee and Board, the NWMC identified four strategies that will improve transportation and air quality throughout the region:

  • Expanding and improving transit service
  • Completing the existing highway network
  • Strategic improvements to the local arterial road network
  • Providing safe bicycle and pedestrian facilities

Directed by these strategies, the Conference updated our transportation priority projects list for 2009 to identify unfunded and underfunded projects in the NWMC region in anticipation of a state capital program (now passed) and a new federal transportation bill (pending).  The priority list is headlined by those projects identified as the top transportation priorities of the Conference:

  • Metra’s STAR Line, from O’Hare Airport to Hoffman Estates then south to Joliet.
  • CTA’s Yellow Line extension from Dempster Street in Skokie to the Old Orchard area.
  • The extension of Illinois Route 53 from its current terminus at Lake Cook Road through Lake County to I-94.
  • The reconstruction and reconfiguration of Palatine Road from Northbrook to Palatine.
  • A bike path paralleling Northwest Highway from Palatine to Park Ridge.

The complete list of projects contains other regionally or locally important projects and totals over $3.4 billion, demonstrating the far-reaching and multi-jurisdictional needs of the transportation network and illuminating the need for a comprehensive state capital program.

Route 53 Extension

The Illinois Tollway created the Illinois Route 53/120 Blue Ribbon Advisory Council to assist in the planning and potential building of the Illinois Route 53/120 project in Lake County.  The Advisory Council passed a resolution supporting the project in 2012.  For more information, please visit the Illinois Tollway website.  The Tollway is continuing planning through a Finance Committee and Land Use Committee to further refine the work of the Blue Ribbon Advisory Council.
